It's a daily charge. You can drive in and out multiple times per day, for one single payment.
For vehicles that don't meet the emission standards. It's the same price in advance, on the day or the day after.
If you don't pay within 3 days. It's reduced to £90 if you pay the fine within 14 days.
London-licensed taxis, wheelchair-accessible private hire vehicles, historic vehicles and some specialist vehicles are exempt. Lorries over 3.5 tonnes and buses and coaches over 5 tonnes don't pay the ULEZ.
Vehicles that don't meet these emission standards have to pay the charge:
Each day's charge runs from midnight to midnight. If you drive in the zone just before midnight and leave just after, you'll need to pay for two days.
If you need to pay both the ULEZ and the Congestion Charge, you can pay them in the same transaction. Receipts are kept in the app in case you need to check back.
If you drive in the zone often, set up AutoPay. It's free to set up. Caura then pays the charge each time you drive in the zone.
The daily ULEZ charge is £12.50 for non-compliant light vehicles, including cars, motorcycles and vans up to 3.5 tonnes. Heavier vehicles like lorries, buses and coaches fall under the separate Low Emission Zone (LEZ) scheme. The penalty fine for non-payment of the ULEZ charge is £180, reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days.
Pay the charge within 3 days of driving in the zone or you'll be fined. TfL cameras sit at the entrances and exits to the zone.
All non-compliant vehicles driven in the zone without paying the daily charge are liable to a Penalty Charge Notice of £180. You have 28 days to pay it. If you pay within 14 days, it's reduced to £90. If it's still unpaid after 28 days, TfL issues a Charge Certificate that raises the fine to £270.
The ULEZ is London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone. It is designed to reduce the number of high-polluting vehicles driving within London. You can learn more about the ULEZ on our London ULEZ page.
Caura tells you if your vehicle is exempt from the Congestion or ULEZ charges. Select City Charges from the Home screen for your vehicle and you’ll see any exemptions you have.
These vehicles are exempt from the charge:
Local residents haven't been exempt since October 2021. You can check your vehicle on TfL's discounts and exemptions page.
Heavier vehicles may need to pay the London LEZ instead.
Each ULEZ charge payment covers you for all your vehicle’s journeys made in the zone for that day. Beware of double charging: each day the charge expires at midnight. This means that if you drive into the ULEZ at 11:59pm and leave the next day at 12:01am you will be liable to pay for two ULEZ charges.
TfL use ANPR cameras to automatically detect your vehicle when you drive into the ULEZ zone. Look out for signs that clearly indicate the boundary of the zone. The easiest way to avoid fines is to set up Caura AutoPay for free in-app. AutoPay lets you automatically pay London’s ULEZ and Congestion Charge. It also covers London’s LEZ zone for HGVs. When you drive into the charging zones, TfL automatically recognises your vehicle and up to 5 days later they notify us of your journey. We’ll then charge your payment card. No need to worry or pay manually.
Caura is the fastest way to pay. It takes two seconds via the app and we charge no additional fee. Getting your car set up on Caura takes less than 30 seconds and you can manage all your vehicle admin, from tolls to tax, in-app with Caura.
Currently, you can pay for either today, tomorrow or yesterday in-app on Caura. Make sure you pay for the right date for any trips you make, as we’re unable to offer a refund for any payments made for the wrong day by mistake.
Unfortunately we can’t offer a refund. We don’t take any of the money for your payment, and once it’s made it goes straight to the end provider (e.g. TfL), so we’re unable to recover it. However, you can apply to TfL for a refund. You’ll need your receipt details, which you’ll find in the History tab on Caura.
You will face a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) if you have driven into the ULEZ zone, not made a payment for that day and are not exempt.
Here are some other reasons why you may have been fined:
The other charges, tolls and car admin you can sort in the Caura app.
